Inspirational Love Stories That Inspired The Couples Suite

Saint Valentine

Michael Collins & Kitty Kiernan

Michael Collins & Kitty Kiernan

Saint Valentine was a Christian priest and martyr in 3rd-century Rome, believed to have ministered to persecuted Christians and to couples whose marriages were forbidden under imperial law. Executed for his faith, he became associated with love as an act of devotion, courage, and defiance. In 1835, his remains were brought from Rome to Dublin by the Irish Carmelite priest John Spratt. They now rest beneath the altar of Whitefriar Street Church, where the shrine has become a quiet place of pilgrimage, and where love is not celebrated loudly, but entrusted, remembered, and kept.

Their love blossomed in the hush between battles during the Irish War of Independence — a romance carried by handwritten letters and fleeting, stolen moments. Though often apart, their hearts remained inseparable, bound by longing, faith, and quiet devotion. Just weeks before her wedding, he was taken from her in 1922, and the life they dreamed of was never to unfold. Kitty could not bear to see him again, choosing instead to remember him as he lived, wearing only black for the remainder of her life in mourning. “I wish I were with him,” she wrote. She never married, carrying their love alone through the years — a devotion untouched by time, shaped by loss, and forever sealed in absence.

James Joyce & Nora Barnacle

James Joyce & Nora Barnacle

Few love stories are as bound to Dublin as that of James Joyce and Nora Barnacle. She was his muse, his anchor and his great love - the woman who shaped some of literature’s most intimate passages.

From their first date on 16 June 1904, now immortalised as Bloomsday, to the letters and longing that followed them across Europe, their romance began on Dublin streets and never truly left.

It was a love that shaped a storyteller… and a city that shaped them both.

Ha’penny Bridge

Princess Grace and Prince Rainie

James Joyce & Nora Barnacle

Since its opening in 1816, the Ha’penny Bridge has served as a natural meeting point between north and south Dublin. For generations, lovers crossed the River Liffey toward one another, each leaving their own side of the city as a gesture of meeting halfway. The bridge became a place of first encounters, reconciliations, proposals, and quiet commitments — where time slowed long enough for hands to find each other and futures destined to last a lifetime

Princess Grace and Prince Rainie

Princess Grace and Prince Rainie

Princess Grace and Prince Rainie

When Princess Grace and Prince Rainier III of Monaco arrived in Dublin in 1961, the city fell instantly, and completely, in love with them.

Their visit, part-official and part-pilgrimage to Grace’s Irish roots, drew enormous crowds. Thousands lined O’Connell Street and Dame Street simply for the chance to see her - the Hollywood star turned princess who carried Ireland in her heart.

What Dublin remembers most is the warmth: a glamorous royal couple who moved through the city with grace, charm and genuine affection.

That short trip cemented a special connection between Dublin and the House of Monaco - a tie that continues to this day.

Tristan and Isolde Chapelizod

Princess Grace and Prince Rainie

Princess Grace and Prince Rainie

The legendary lovers Tristan and Isolde are rooted deep in Dublin folklore. Chapelizod, named for Chapel Iseult, is believed to be the resting place of Isolde herself, tying one of the world’s greatest tragic romances directly to the city.

Their story of impossible love, sacrifice and destiny resonates even stronger knowing Dublin holds part of its history. The village of Chapelizod becomes not just a backdrop, but a keeper of their final chapter.
