 Saint Valentine was a Christian priest and martyr in 3rd-century Rome, believed to have ministered to persecuted Christians and to couples whose marriages were forbidden under imperial law. Executed for his faith, he became associated with love as an act of devotion, courage, and defiance. In 1835, his remains were brought from Rome to Dublin by the Irish Carmelite priest John Spratt. They now rest beneath the altar of Whitefriar Street Church, where the shrine has become a quiet place of pilgrimage, and where love is not celebrated loudly, but entrusted, remembered, and kept.   

 Their love blossomed in the hush between battles during the Irish War of Independence — a romance carried by handwritten letters and fleeting, stolen moments. Though often apart, their hearts remained inseparable, bound by longing, faith, and quiet devotion. Just weeks before her wedding, he was taken from her in 1922, and the life they dreamed of was never to unfold. Kitty could not bear to see him again, choosing instead to remember him as he lived, wearing only black for the remainder of her life in mourning. “I wish I were with him,” she wrote. She never married, carrying their love alone through the years — a devotion untouched by time, shaped by loss, and forever sealed in absence. 

 Few love stories are as bound to Dublin as that of James Joyce and Nora Barnacle. She was his muse, his anchor and his great love - the woman who shaped some of literature’s most intimate passages.

From their first date on 16 June 1904, now immortalised as Bloomsday, to the letters and longing that followed them across Europe, their romance began on Dublin streets and never truly left.
